The contact form

If you use the contact form, the site collects the fields you fill in: your name, organization, role or title, email address, subject, and message. That information is emailed to Erik and stored, encrypted, in AWS in the United States, for about twelve months, after which it is deleted automatically. You can ask for your message to be deleted sooner at any time by sending a deletion request through the contact form; use the same email address you used in the original message so it can be matched.

The human check

The contact form uses Cloudflare Turnstile as a visible human check, because the destination address is not published anywhere on the site. Turnstile runs only on the contact page. It processes your IP address and some browser signals under Cloudflare's own privacy policy; this site does not receive or store those values itself.

Analytics

This site counts a handful of anonymous events: which Field Guide sections are read, which downloads are used, whether the contact form is started and completed, searches that return no results, and clicks to external sites. Each event is recorded together with the broad category of the referring site (for example, LinkedIn, a search engine, or direct) and the country the request came from.

This site does not use cookies, local storage, advertising identifiers, or fingerprinting for analytics, and no IP address or other persistent identifier is stored by the site itself. Detailed event rows are kept for about ninety days; aggregate counts are kept for about two years so year over year comparisons are possible.

This site honors Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track: if your browser sends either signal, no analytics event is sent at all.

What is never collected

No advertising identifiers, no third-party analytics or advertising scripts, no fingerprinting, and no tracking across other sites. Nothing here is sold or shared with anyone except the processors named above (AWS for storage and email delivery, Cloudflare for the human check).

Use the contact form with the subject "Privacy question or data deletion request" for any question about this page, or to request deletion of a message you sent through the form. No email address is published for this site; the form is the way in.
